Importing Anki decks
Synapse imports standard Anki .apkg files you already own:
- In Anki on the desktop, select your deck and choose Export.
- Choose the “Anki Deck Package (.apkg)” format and enable “Support older Anki versions”.
- Get the file onto your device (AirDrop, iCloud Drive, email) and open it from the Files app, or use the import button in Synapse.
Synapse rebuilds the deck's subject/chapter hierarchy and renders images, LaTeX, and cloze deletions. Note: the very newest Anki export format is not yet supported — if an import is rejected, re-export with “Support older Anki versions” turned on.
iCloud sync
Make sure you're signed into iCloud and that iCloud Drive is enabled for Synapse (Settings → your name → iCloud). Your decks and progress then sync automatically across your iPhone and iPad. Sync runs in the background and may take a moment after large imports.
The AI study coach
The coach and study insights run on-device using Apple Intelligence. If you don't see them, confirm your device supports Apple Intelligence and that it's turned on in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. The coach only discusses your own subjects and progress, and works offline.
Premium, subscriptions & restoring purchases
Synapse is free to use with up to 5 card reviews a day and 100 cards. Premium removes those limits — unlimited daily reviews and unlimited cards — for $79.99/year (with a 7-day free trial) or a one-time $99.99 lifetime unlock.
- Restore a purchase (new device, or reinstalled the app): open the upgrade screen and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple Account you bought with.
- Manage or cancel a subscription: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Synapse. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge.
- Free trial: the 7-day trial converts to a paid year unless you cancel before it ends.
- Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Full subscription terms are in our Terms of Use.
Device requirements
- Universal app for iPhone and iPad.
- Apple Pencil features require a compatible iPad.
- The on-device AI coach requires a device that supports Apple Intelligence. All other features work without it.
Troubleshooting
- An import failed. Re-export the deck from Anki with “Support older Anki versions” enabled.
- Math or images look off. Re-import the deck so its media is refreshed; LaTeX renders offline.
- Data isn't syncing. Check that both devices are signed into the same iCloud account with iCloud Drive enabled, then reopen the app.
